I have seen a greater exhibition of paintings in oil elf Whistler at the Freer Gallery in Washington DC last week. The show consists of about 25 tables (seascapes, landscapes, figures) that usually 4 x 7 inches in the tariff. They seem to be mostly outdoors and in a duet from various sources, may have been on an easel type cigar box. Whistler insignificant oil paintings seem to have been warmly welcomed by art historians and they are not falling back on its blockbuster job a little better known. From the perspective of the viewer, however, this is a real reaction, because you can see these gems without the crowds.
It is an idle, contemplative show. Physically, the paintings are extremely fragile and performance, bordering the austere. There are passages where Whistler seems to allow the paint to the pool of milky water almost up to the world in a cloud here, a roll there, like a watercolor....
